Hamburg`s largest container rail terminal - innovation in efficiency
Container Terminal Alternwerder (CTA), operated by HHLA, is Hamburg’s largest container rail terminal, with a capacity of 930,000 standard containers (Hafen-Hamburg). CTA has been recognised for innovation in efficiency for projects like its battery powered automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and charging stations. The automated system, which works to reduce exhaust, emissions and noise pollution, has been supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment’s programme “Flottenversuch Elektromobilität im Wirtschaftsverkehr” (Fleet Test of Electromobility in Commercial Transportation). The battery system technology was developed as part of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology’s BESIC project (Battery Electric Heavy Goods Transports within the Intelligent Container Terminal Operation).
