German providers can have regional origin of renewable electricity certified from 2019

Federal economy ministry (BMWi)

German electricity providers will be able to have their products’ regional origin certified from January 2019 on, writes the economy ministry (BMWi) in a press release. The Federal Environment Agency (UBA) will make sure that the “regional characteristic” of every kilowatt hour of renewable electricity will only be sold once, writes BMWi. Plant operators can have regional certificates issued to them and transfer these with the electricity to the suppliers. The suppliers use the certificates and can thus show the regional characteristics of the renewable power in their electricity labelling.
