Clean Energy Wire
The US leads the world in cities and regions that are aiming for 100 percent renewable energy, and Germany takes second place, according to an overview by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). While the US boasts 98 such sub-national frontrunners, Germany comes second with 71, followed by Sweden with 18 (see graph). IRENA’s publication “Towards 100% Renewable Energy: Status, Trends and Lessons Learned” also takes a closer look at the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate as a case study.
