The energy transition: A business success story, right from the start - #GETJO19 keynote speaker Andreas Kuhlmann (dena)

Just a few days ahead of CLEW's Global Energy Transition Journalism conference in Berlin on 7-8 April, keynote speaker Andreas Kuhlmann, chief executive of the German Energy Agency (dena), shares his ideas on some of the conference's central questions.

The interplay of business, climate action and the energy transition is often misjudged. It is either viewed too negatively, with a focus on the dangers and imminent losses in industrial sectors and employment or on carbon leakage. Or, on the other hand, it is considered solely positive, focusing only on new technologies, market entrants or new business sectors. The huge efforts of transitioning a whole economy and society are then often disregarded or trivialized.

But with a more balanced approach, we will find that the German economy has proven its strengths. Its economic ecosystem started to adapt very early, not giving up despite failures and setbacks. German companies have understood, better than politics, the marathon-like nature of this task and the necessity to be clear about the goal, right from the start.

The Global Energy Transition Journalism conference will take place in Berlin on 7-8 April 2019. Around 100 international journalists will discuss how the business sector is adjusting to the climate crisis and shaping the energy transition, and how journalists should cover these transformations.
