Kirsten Westphal is an expert on international energy policy, security of supply, and renewables, among others. She has published extensively on the international significance of the Energiewende and Germany's dependence on fossil fuel imports from Russia.

Since 2022, she is on leave of abscence to act as executive director of the German government's hydrogen import initiative H2Global Stiftung.
