Deutsche Post to invest 7 billion euros in climate-neutral logistics by 2030

German postal service Deutsche Post DHL is investing seven billion euros in climate-neutral logistics until 2030, the company announced in a press release on Monday. Money is to flow particularly towards alternative aviation fuels, the expansion of its e-vehicle fleet, and making its buildings climate-neutral. By 2030, the company aims to deploy 80,000 e-vehicles for last-mile deliveries, which would result in 60 percent electrification of the global fleet, Deutsche Post writes. In addition, the Group wants to increase the share of sustainable fuels in line haul and aviation to more than 30 percent by the same year, the company writes. “We are turning our yellow Group into a green company and making an important contribution to our planet and society," said CEO of the group Frank Appel.

In 2017, the company set itself the goal of reaching climate-neutrality by 2050. With the investments, Deutsche Post DHL expects to reduce its annual CO2-emissions to below 29 million tonnes by 2030, instead of the 46 million tonnes expected without new sustainability measures. In 2020, emissions were 33 million tonnes. Earlier this year, Deutsche Post’s electric vehicle StreetScooter attracted potential buyers, despite its predicted demise. Around 14,000 StreetScooters are currently used in everyday postal service and the fleet is expected to increase to 20,000 units by the end of the year, the company writes.
